When Does My Vehicle Need an Oil Change?

The frequency of a vehicle’s routine maintenance services will depend on a few different factors. Your vehicle’s year, make, and model will all factor into how often it needs its oil changed. A few of the other components that will affect your vehicle’s oil change schedule are:
  • The manner and environment in which you drive
  • How long it has been since your vehicle’s last oil change
  • How many miles your vehicle has accumulated since its last oil change
Due to the fact that your vehicle has its own unique care and maintenance needs, it’s important that you refer to your owner’s manual for any care instructions or information. Your owner’s manual should tell you when and how often your vehicle needs its oil changed. As always, our service technicians at Stanley CDJR Gilmer can provide you with expert advice if you ever have any questions about your vehicle.

What Makes Oil Changes Important?

Oil changes are important because oil is what keeps your engine clean and functioning properly. Over time, the oil will break down and become less effective. Once your oil breaks down, it can no longer do its job of collecting harmful materials, and your engine can end up experiencing extensive damage. So, the simple answer to why oil changes are important is because it protects your engine and prevents engine failure and costly repairs.

How Do I Change My Oil?

Now that we’ve covered why oil changes are important, you may be wondering how they are performed. Well, a service technician will follow a few basic steps to change a vehicle’s oil.
  • The first step for any vehicle maintenance is to put on the proper safety gear. Then they will begin by driving the vehicle up onto ramps, putting it in park, and equipping the emergency brake.
  • Next, they will locate the drain plug and place an oil pan underneath before removing the plug and giving the old oil time to drain into the pan.
  • After the drain plug is replaced, they will move the pan underneath the oil filter so that it can be cleaned or replaced if need be.
  • Then, the next step is to add new oil by lifting the hood, removing the engine oil cap, and placing a funnel inside the hole. The proper amount and type of oil will be added through the funnel and then the engine cap can be replaced.
  • Finally, once everything is secure and the area is cleaned, they will drive the vehicle off the ramps and then the oil change is complete.
